A Message From WVFL President,
Shirley J. Stanton
Dear Workers in the Battle for Life:
Whether you have been in this battle for 35 years or 35 days,
this letter is dedicated to you.
How can we respond to one of the most humanly destructive and
devastating realities of our time? Abortion in America.
The Roe v. Wade decision, for all intents and purposes, made
it legal for any pregnant woman to obtain an abortion for any
reason or for no reason. The Supreme Court’s legitimation of
abortion causes the woman to consider abortion a private matter
and no one else’s business. She may confuse what is "legal" with
what is "moral". Many mistakenly reason that because abortion is
legal, it is morally acceptable.
However, God says to us, "Can a woman forget her sucking child, that
she should have compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may
forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have graven you on the
palms of my hand." Isaiah 49:15-16.
Each unborn child has been carved in the hand of God from
conception, not only now in this life but forever. God will not
forget them. Neither can we.
John Cardinal O’Connor wrote, "I believe...that the cause of
human life will prevail. I believe that all of those who have
joined in the struggle to preserve, to protest, and to enhance
the dignity and the sacredness of every human life will
prevail."
The Reverend Paul M. Clark asks, "What is dignity? Dignity
recognizes the worth of human life. Dignity stems from a deep
appreciation and understanding that human life is a gift from
God."
Then he instructs us as follows, "We must stand steadfast in
our battle for human dignity. We must be infected
with...compassion for the helpless...with love for the good and
the right...to the point where we act. We must act by patiently,
quietly, faithfully continuing in the toilsome work of changing
minds, educating youth, helping young women with crisis
pregnancies find alternatives to abortion, easing the pain of
those who suffer, caring for and offering forgiveness to those
who have taken life. This is work to be sure. It is work in the
trenches. It is work that is long and hard, and lacking an end
in sight. But it is God’s work, and we are called to participate
in it."
Thank all of you who are in this battle from the bottom of my
heart!
Blessings!
