Dear Friends of the Unborn,
On July 18, I was elected president of West Virginians for Life.
It is quite humbling to follow in the footsteps of past presidents
Dr. Wanda Franz; Charlotte Snead, MSW; and Shirley Stanton, Esq. I
can only promise I will do my best.
During this time of “change” in our country’s history, I am
reminded of Thomas Paine in The Crisis. “These are the times
that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot
will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but
he that stands by it now deserves the love and thanks of man and
woman.”.
As you know, Obama and the pro-abortion leadership in Congress
are trying to push through “health care reform” legislation that
would ration lifesaving treatment and include taxpayer financed
abortions.
Their plan is to push through the legislation so fast that
opponents won’t have time to mobilize opposition to the bill. They
plan to pass legislation in September so we have to act quickly.

Obama has promised pro-abortion advocates that any reform would
include abortion coverage. However, Obama knows that abortion
mandates would be unpopular with the American people so he might try
to achieve sweeping pro-abortion effects without even mentioning the
word "abortion." The legislation might delegate authority to some
board or group of officials to determine the scope of any
government-mandated package of health care benefits. The board or
official could then mandate that all plans have to pay for abortion
on demand. If you have not done so already, please take a few minutes to
call U.S. Senators Byrd and Rockefeller and your Congressman in the
U.S. House of Representatives. Urge them to oppose any federal
“health care reform” legislation that does not explicitly exclude

These are the times that try men’s souls. We cannot be
summer soldiers or sunshine patriots. Paine closed by saying, “By
perseverance and fortitude we have the prospect of a glorious issue;
by cowardice and submission, the sad choice of a variety of evils…”
We must persevere. The lives of our children, our
grandchildren, and our parents hang in the balance.
